Veils in Motion

A few years ago I was involved in this collaborative production that focused on the recent construction of a $6 million suicide barrier (called "the Luminous Veil", hence the title) over the Bloor-Danforth Viaduct in Toronto. I mostly focused on creating background video that could be projected on the walls of the installation room, but this one day I got together with two musicians from the group and a grand piano. We opened up the back of the piano and placed paper clips, clothes pins, tin foil and other assorted items on the strings. Then we proceeded to make noise by playing the keys, plucking the strings or scratching, bumping and generally abusing this beautiful instrument. I then took the sound we recorded and mixed it together, using some of the footage I had collected to create a video for background projection. The sound is the focal point of the video, as the images were projected across walls and an interpretive sculpture we constructed to resemble the Veil.
